Graphics Card Problems: Diagnosing What Went Wrong

No display, beeping, freezing or worse performance after fitting a card — how to work out which of the four usual causes you have.

Nearly every graphics card problem comes down to one of four things: power, seating, drivers, or a bottleneck elsewhere in the machine. Knowing which one you have is most of the work.

This covers what the card does, whether you need one at all, and how to diagnose the failures that come up most often.

What a graphics card actually does

It handles the calculations that produce what you see. Every frame in a game, every video decode, every window animation.

It has its own processor and its own memory, separate from the system's. That is why it is a separate component with its own power connector and its own cooling.

Integrated graphics are built into the processor and share system memory. They are entirely adequate for browsing, documents, video and light work, and they are not adequate for demanding games or heavy creative work.

Can a computer run without one?

Yes, if the processor has integrated graphics or the motherboard has a display output that works with your processor.

No, if it does not. Some processors — particularly certain desktop models — have no integrated graphics at all. In that case, no card means no display, and this catches people building a machine for the first time.

How to tell: look up your exact processor model. Manufacturers indicate this in the specification, and some model numbers signal it directly. If in doubt, check before ordering.

The machine will still power on without a card — fans spin, lights come on — but there is nothing to send to the monitor. Which is the first thing to establish when a new build appears dead.

Problem 1: no display at all after fitting a card

The most alarming and usually the simplest.

Check the monitor is plugged into the card, not the motherboard. Once a card is installed, the motherboard outputs are usually disabled. This is the single most common cause and it takes ten seconds to check.

Check the power connectors. Most cards need one or two supplementary connectors from the power supply. Partly seated is the same as not connected. They click.

Check the card is fully seated. It should sit flat, with the retaining clip engaged, and the bracket lining up with the case. Press firmly at both ends.

Check the power supply is adequate. A card that draws more than the supply can deliver produces exactly this symptom. Compare the card's stated requirement with the supply's rating, and note that a cheap supply rarely delivers its label.

Try the monitor cable and a different port. Cables fail, and so do individual outputs.

Then remove the card and use the motherboard output, if your processor allows it. If the machine works that way, the fault is the card, the slot or the power. If it does not, the problem is elsewhere entirely.

Problem 2: beeping on startup

Most motherboards use beep codes to report a fault before any display exists.

The pattern means something specific, and the meaning differs by motherboard manufacturer. Look up the code for your board rather than assuming.

After installing a card, the usual causes are: the card not seated, no display device detected, or insufficient power.

Many modern boards use diagnostic LEDs instead of beeps — a row of labelled lights for CPU, memory, graphics and boot. If the graphics light stays lit, the board is telling you exactly where to look.

Reseat before anything else. Power off fully, unplug, remove the card, check the slot for dust, and refit firmly.

Problem 3: random freezing

Harder, because several causes produce the same symptom.

Drivers are the first suspect. Perform a clean driver installation rather than an upgrade over the top — the removal tools that strip previous drivers completely exist for exactly this reason, and residue from a previous card is a common cause.

Overheating. Check temperatures under load with monitoring software. If the card is running very hot, the causes are dust, poor case airflow, failed fans, or old thermal paste.

Power delivery. A supply that is adequate at idle and marginal under load produces freezes and sudden restarts exactly when the card draws most. This is the most under-diagnosed cause.

Memory. Test the system memory as well — faulty modules produce freezes that look like graphics faults.

Overclocking, whether yours or a factory setting. Return it to stock and see whether the freezing stops.

A failing card. If artefacts appear — coloured dots, distorted textures, lines — the card itself is likely at fault.

The diagnostic that separates them: does it freeze only under load, or also at the desktop? Under load only points at power, heat or the card. At any time points at drivers or memory.

Problem 4: the new card made things slower

Counterintuitive and it happens.

The old driver is still installed. By far the most common cause. Remove the previous driver completely and install fresh.

The power supply is inadequate, so the card throttles rather than crashing.

The processor is now the limit. A powerful card paired with an older processor produces less improvement than expected, and in some situations a slight regression. This is a genuine bottleneck rather than a fault.

The card is in the wrong slot. It should be in the primary slot, which is usually the one closest to the processor. A secondary slot may run at reduced bandwidth.

Settings carried over. Resolution, refresh rate or a display setting that did not update.

The monitor connection. A high-refresh monitor connected by the wrong cable type may be limited to a lower refresh rate.

Power settings. Both the operating system and the card's control panel have performance profiles, and a power-saving setting can substantially reduce output.

A diagnostic order that works

Rather than trying everything at once.

1. Does it power on and display? If not, see problem 1 — monitor connection, power connectors, seating.

2. Any beeps or diagnostic lights? Look up the code before touching anything else.

3. Does it work at the desktop but fail under load? Power or heat.

4. Does it fail at any time? Drivers or memory.

5. Is performance worse than expected but stable? Drivers, bottleneck, or settings.

6. Are there visual artefacts? The card itself.

Change one thing at a time, and test between changes. Changing three things and finding it works tells you nothing about what was wrong.

Before you buy a replacement

Test the card in another machine, or another card in yours, if you can. This single test separates a card fault from everything else and it is worth borrowing hardware to do.

Check the warranty. Graphics cards carry long warranties and people forget.

Check whether the power supply is the real problem. Replacing a card that was never faulty, into a system that still cannot power it, repeats the fault at greater cost.

The short version

Four causes cover nearly everything: power, seating, drivers, and a bottleneck elsewhere.

No display after fitting a card? Check the monitor is plugged into the card and not the motherboard. It is the most common cause by a wide margin.

Beeping or a lit diagnostic LED tells you where to look — find the code for your specific motherboard.

Freezing under load only means power or heat. Freezing at any time means drivers or memory.

A new card that made things slower is usually leftover drivers — remove the old ones completely and install fresh.
