Why Is My Computer Slow? Finding Out Before Spending Money
Four things cause nearly all slowness, and the system monitor tells you which in thirty seconds. How to read it, and what fixes each.

Almost everyone answers this by guessing, then buying something. The machine already knows the answer and will tell you in thirty seconds.
Look before you do anything
Open the system monitor while the machine is actually slow. Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on macOS.
Look at four figures:
CPU — if it is pinned near 100%, something is working hard. Sort by CPU usage and see what.
Memory — if it is nearly full and the machine slows when you open more, you are short of memory.
Disk — if it sits at 100% while the processor is idle, storage is the bottleneck. This is the most common cause on an older machine and the most commonly misdiagnosed.
Network — relevant when the slowness is only online.
Whichever is at its limit is your answer. If none of them is, the slowness is elsewhere — see the sections below.
Cause 1: a mechanical hard drive
By far the most common cause of a machine that feels slow at everything.
Symptoms: slow to start, slow to open applications, the drive light constantly lit, everything feels like it lags by a beat.
Confirm it: disk at or near 100% in the monitor while the processor is idle, and check whether the drive is mechanical or solid state in the system information.
The fix: replace it with a solid state drive. This is the single most noticeable upgrade available on an older machine and it costs less than most people expect. It affects everything you do constantly rather than one thing occasionally.

Cause 2: not enough memory
Symptoms: fine with a few things open, slows badly with more, recovers when you close some.
Confirm it: memory near capacity, and disk activity rising as the system moves data to storage.
Free fixes first: close what you are not using, reduce browser tabs, remove extensions, and check what starts automatically.
The fix: more memory, if the machine allows it and if you are genuinely running out. Not if you are not — spare memory does nothing. See RAM explained.
Cause 3: something is using the processor
Symptoms: fans loud, machine hot, everything sluggish, and one process at the top of the list.
Confirm it: sort by CPU in the monitor.
Common culprits: a browser tab, an update running, an antivirus scan, indexing after a large file change, a stuck process, or malware.
Some of these are temporary and legitimate. An update or an index rebuild finishes. Let it.
If one process is permanently high, look up its name before killing it — some system processes look alarming and are doing necessary work.
Cause 4: overheating and throttling
Symptoms: fast for the first ten minutes, then progressively slower. Fans loud. Hot to the touch.
What is happening: components reduce their own speed to avoid damage. The machine is protecting itself.
Confirm it: monitoring software showing temperatures climbing to the limit, with clock speeds dropping as they do.
The fix: clean the dust. In a laptop, the clogged heatsink is usually the cause and blowing through the vent frequently does not clear it. See cleaning and maintaining your devices.
Then check the fans still spin, and consider thermal paste if cleaning did not help.
When nothing is at its limit
The machine is slow and no resource is saturated. Several possibilities.
A nearly full drive. Below about ten to fifteen percent free, performance degrades — particularly on solid state drives, which need free space to manage writes. Free space and retest.
Too much starting automatically. Not enough to saturate anything, and enough to add up.
A failing drive. Read errors cause pauses while the system retries. Check drive health through SMART reporting — this is worth doing early, because the fix is urgent.
Network rather than machine. If only online things are slow, the machine is fine. See wireless connection problems.
Browser rather than machine. Test something local. If the browser is slow and everything else is fine, the problem is extensions, tabs or the browser profile.
An operating system that has accumulated years of changes. Real, and less common than people assume — worth suspecting only after the others.
Free things worth doing first
In order of effect.
Restart. Clears memory and stuck processes. See restarting and rebooting.
Free up disk space. Aim for at least fifteen percent free.
Review startup programs and disable what you do not need immediately.
Update everything, including drivers, because performance fixes arrive in updates.
Reduce browser extensions and open tabs.
Clean the dust, which is free and helps more than anything on this list on an older machine.
Uninstall software you do not use, particularly anything running in the background.
Do these before buying anything. Together they resolve a large share of complaints.
Deciding what to spend
Storage first, if it is mechanical. Largest improvement per pound by a wide margin.
Memory second, if you are actually running out.
Processor or graphics only if the monitor showed one of them saturated during the thing you care about — and be aware this usually means a new motherboard and effectively a new machine.
Nothing, if no resource is saturated and the free fixes helped. See computer hardware.
What does not help
"Optimiser" and "speed booster" software. The genuine optimisations are the free list above, and you can do them yourself.
Registry cleaners. No measurable benefit, real risk.
Defragmenting a solid state drive. Achieves nothing and consumes write cycles.
More memory when you are not short of memory.
A faster processor when the drive is the bottleneck — the fastest processor in the world still waits for a slow disk.
The short version
Open the system monitor while it is slow. Whichever of processor, memory or disk is at its limit is your answer.
Disk at 100% with an idle processor means a mechanical drive — and replacing it is the most noticeable upgrade available.
Fast for ten minutes then slow means heat, and cleaning the dust is free.
Do the free list before buying anything — restart, free space, startup programs, updates, dust.
And do not add memory unless you are actually running out. Spare memory does nothing at all.
