Making an Old Computer Usable Again

A machine that has become painful can usually be made pleasant again for very little. The steps in order, from free to cheap to worthwhile.

A machine that takes three minutes to start and stalls when you open a browser is not necessarily finished. Most of them can be made genuinely pleasant to use again, and the work costs less than people expect.

Do these in order. Stop when the machine is good enough.

Before anything: is it worth it?

Two questions.

Does it still receive security updates? If not, the answer changes — see when a device stops receiving updates. The machine can still be made fast; it should not be your main connected device.

What do you need it to do? Browsing, email, documents and video are achievable on very modest hardware. Modern games and video editing are not.

Match the goal to the machine and the rest becomes straightforward.

Free, in order of effect

Clean the dust

Start here, because it addresses the one genuine physical mechanism and it costs nothing.

A machine that runs hot reduces its own speed to protect itself. On an old laptop, a clogged heatsink is extremely common and blowing through the vent frequently does not clear it — opening it and removing the dust mat by hand is the fix. See cleaning and maintaining.

Free up disk space

Aim for at least fifteen percent free. Below that, performance degrades measurably.

Where the space usually is: downloads, old installers, duplicate photographs, browser caches, and previous system versions kept after an update. Both major systems include a tool that finds these.

Move rather than delete anything you might want, onto an external drive.

Cut what starts automatically

Review the startup list and disable anything that does not need to be there when the machine turns on.

Uninstall software you do not use, particularly anything with a background component — old printer suites, trial security products, updaters for software you removed.

Reduce the browser

The heaviest thing most old machines run.

Add a content blocker, which removes a substantial share of the work a page does. On an old machine this is the single most noticeable free change.

Remove extensions you do not use — each one runs on every page.

Keep fewer tabs open. Each is a live process.

Consider a lighter browser if yours has become demanding.

Update everything

Including drivers. Performance and stability fixes arrive in updates, and an old machine running old drivers is being penalised twice.

Restart

If it has been running for weeks. See restarting and rebooting.

Cheap, and the largest single improvement

A solid state drive

If the machine still has a mechanical drive, this transforms it.

Startup, opening applications and every file operation improve dramatically. It affects what you do constantly rather than one thing occasionally, and it costs a fraction of a replacement machine.

On almost any machine from the last fifteen years this is possible, and it is the best value upgrade in computing.

More memory, if you are running out

Check first. Open the system monitor while the machine is slow. If memory is near capacity, more helps. If not, it does nothing. See why is my computer slow.

On a desktop, straightforward. On a laptop, check whether it is soldered.

A new battery

On a laptop that is otherwise fine. It restores portability and, on some machines, performance on mains power.

Thermal paste

If cleaning did not fix a heat problem. Cheap, and it needs care.

Worthwhile: change the system

Where the machine is capable but the system has outgrown it, or support has ended.

A lightweight Linux distribution runs well on hardware the original manufacturer has abandoned, receives updates for years, and is free.

For browsing, email, documents and media it is entirely adequate, and on old hardware it is frequently dramatically faster than the system it replaces.

Try it from a USB stick first. It runs without installing anything and shows whether your hardware works. Half an hour, no commitment.

The obstacles are real: learning different conventions, and software that only exists elsewhere. Neither is large if the use is ordinary.

Alternatively, a clean reinstall of the original system removes years of accumulated configuration. It takes a day, it works, and everything above should be tried first.

Giving it a job

Sometimes the answer is not to make it a general machine again.

A dedicated machine for one task — writing, music, a workshop, a kitchen — performs adequately because it only does one thing.

A media server on your own network.

A machine for a child, with the risky activity done elsewhere.

A machine for someone who needs one, which is frequently the best outcome. Wipe it properly first. See how to wipe a hard drive.

What does not help

Optimiser and cleaner software. The genuine optimisations are the free list above.

Registry cleaners.

Defragmenting a solid state drive, which achieves nothing and consumes write cycles.

Adding memory when you are not short of it.

A faster processor when the drive is the bottleneck — which on an old machine it almost always is.

Setting expectations

An old machine made fast is fast at what it can do. It will open a browser quickly and still struggle with a demanding site.

The improvement from a solid state drive is larger than people expect and it does not change what the processor can do.

A machine that cannot run what you need is not a speed problem. See repair, upgrade or replace.

The short version

Clean the dust and free up disk space first — both free, and both address real mechanisms.

Add a content blocker. On an old machine it is the most noticeable free change, because web pages are the heaviest thing it runs.

A solid state drive transforms almost any machine with a mechanical one, for a fraction of a replacement.
