Your Home Network: Setting It Up, Securing It and Keeping It Working
Planning, setting up, securing, monitoring and troubleshooting a home network — the whole thing in one place, in the order you actually need it.

A home network is the router, everything connected to it, and the connection going out to your provider. Most of the time you never think about it, and when you do it is because something stopped working.
This covers the whole thing in the order you actually need it: planning, setting up, securing, keeping an eye on it, and finding the fault when something breaks.
Planning: what you actually need
Count the devices, not the people. A household of three might have twenty connected things — phones, laptops, a television, speakers, a console, a printer, a doorbell, thermostats, watches. Routers cope with this differently, and the specification that matters is not top speed.
Map the space before buying anything. Where the connection enters the house, where people actually use devices, and what is between the two. Thick walls, foil-backed insulation, mirrors, water tanks and metal all block Wi-Fi more than distance does.
Decide what needs a cable. Anything stationary that moves a lot of data — a desktop, a games console, a television, a network drive — is better wired. Ethernet is faster, does not degrade, and it takes load off the wireless for everything else.
Then work out whether one router covers the house. A small flat: yes. A three-storey house, a long building, or one with thick internal walls: probably not, and the answer is mesh rather than a more expensive single router.
What to buy
A router that supports the current standard, which is worth it for the improvements in handling many devices at once rather than for the headline speed.
Mesh if the layout demands it. Several units that share one network name and hand devices between them.
Not the fastest router you can afford. Your internet connection is almost always the limit, and a router capable of speeds far beyond it changes nothing.
Setting it up
1. Connect it. The router plugs into the modem or the socket where your connection enters. If your provider supplied a combined unit, you may not need a separate router at all.
2. Change the administrator password. Not the Wi-Fi password — the one for logging into the router itself. Routers ship with defaults that are published online, and this is the single most important step in the whole setup.
3. Set the network name and Wi-Fi password. A password of several unrelated words is both stronger and easier to type on a television remote than a short complicated one.
4. Set encryption to the strongest option available, which on current routers is WPA3, or WPA2 where devices are older. Anything called WEP is obsolete and should never be selected.
5. Turn off WPS, the button-pairing feature. It is convenient and it weakens the network.
6. Update the firmware. Check for an update at setup and enable automatic updates if offered. Router firmware fixes security problems, and an un-updated router is the most commonly overlooked risk in a house.
7. Position it properly. Central, high, out in the open. Not in a cupboard, not behind the television, not on the floor, not next to the microwave. Position does more for coverage than any setting.
8. Set up a guest network for visitors and for smart home devices.
Securing it
The router is the boundary between your house and everything else, and a handful of settings do nearly all the work.
A unique administrator password, as above.
WPA3 or WPA2 encryption, and a long Wi-Fi password.
Firmware kept current.
WPS off.
Remote administration off, unless you genuinely need to manage the router from outside the house. It is on by default on some models and it is a standing invitation.
UPnP considered. It lets devices open ports automatically, which is convenient for consoles and a risk otherwise. Turning it off may break some applications; turning it on removes a control.
A guest network for anything you do not fully trust — visitors, and smart home devices, which are frequently the least maintained things on the network.
Change the network name if it identifies you or the router model.
What is not worth doing
Hiding the network name. It is trivially discovered and it makes connecting harder for you.
MAC address filtering. Addresses are easily spoofed, and maintaining the list is tedious.
Both are widely recommended and neither adds meaningful security.
Keeping an eye on it
Most of the time you do not need to. Worth knowing how when something is wrong.
The connected devices list in the router's interface shows everything currently attached. Look at it occasionally. Anything you cannot identify is worth investigating — though names are frequently unhelpful, so the useful check is the count rather than the names.
Data usage per device, on routers that report it. Useful when a connection is slow and you want to know what is consuming it, or when there is a data cap.
Quality of Service settings let you prioritise particular traffic — a video call over a large download. Worth configuring on a slow connection, unnecessary on a fast one.
A speed test at the router rather than on a laptop across the house tells you whether a problem is the connection or the Wi-Fi. This distinction is the first thing to establish in any slowness complaint.
Maintenance, which is mostly four things
Check for firmware updates every few months, or enable automatic updates.
Restart the router occasionally. Not as a ritual — when it has been up for months and things are behaving oddly. It clears memory leaks and reconnects a stale session.
Review the connected devices list and remove old ones.
Retire old equipment. A router that no longer receives firmware updates is a security problem regardless of whether it still works. Manufacturers publish support periods; when yours ends, replace it.
When something breaks
A routine that finds the cause instead of guessing.
Step 1: how much is affected?
One device? The problem is that device.
All devices, wireless only? The Wi-Fi.
All devices, including wired? The router or the connection.
Establishing this first saves most of the time.
Step 2: is it the connection or your network?
Check the router's status lights — most indicate whether the internet connection itself is up.
Or check the router's admin page, which will report the connection status.
If the connection is down, the problem is your provider or the line, and nothing inside the house will fix it. Check for a reported outage before calling.
Step 3: the restart sequence
In order: modem first, wait two minutes, then router, wait two minutes, then the device.
Doing it in the wrong order is why restarting sometimes appears not to work.
Step 4: if it is one device
Forget the network and reconnect. This clears a bad stored configuration and it fixes a surprising proportion of cases.
Check whether it works on mobile data, which separates a device problem from a network one.
Check for updates on the device.
Check whether it works close to the router, which distinguishes a coverage problem from a connection problem.
Step 5: if it is coverage
Move the router before buying anything. Central, high, unobstructed.
Change the channel, if you are in a flat or a dense area where neighbouring networks overlap. Many routers do this automatically; some do not.
Use the 5GHz band close to the router and 2.4GHz further away. The higher band is faster and travels less well. Most routers now handle this automatically.
Then consider mesh if the house genuinely needs it.
Common problems and their usual causes
Slow at certain times of day — contention on your provider's network, or someone in the house downloading. Check the usage per device.
Slow in one room — coverage. Move the router or extend.
Drops intermittently — interference, an overheating router, a failing power supply, or a device with a bad driver. Check whether it always affects the same device.
Works but pages will not load — usually DNS. Try a different DNS server in the router settings.
Fast on speed tests but slow in use — latency rather than bandwidth. Common on satellite and some connections; affects video calls and gaming more than downloads.
Everything slowed down after adding a device — check whether it is doing something continuous like uploading backups.
When to call your provider
When the connection itself is down and a restart has not fixed it.
When speeds are consistently far below what you pay for, measured wired, at the router, at several times of day. Record the results before calling.
When the fault is intermittent and you have ruled out your own equipment. Ask them to check the line rather than accepting a script.
Have ready: what is affected, what you have already tried, and your measurements. It shortens the call considerably.
The short version
Plan around the layout and the number of devices, not the headline speed.
Change the router's administrator password, set WPA3 or WPA2, turn off WPS, and keep the firmware updated. That is most of your security.
Position the router properly — it does more for coverage than any setting.
When something breaks, first establish whether it affects one device, all wireless devices, or everything — that single question narrows it faster than anything else.
Retire a router that no longer receives updates, even if it still works.
