Reading a Specification Sheet Without Being Misled
Which numbers on a specification sheet predict how a machine will feel, which are marketing, and the omissions that matter more than anything listed.

A specification sheet is written to make a product sound good, and it is not usually dishonest. It emphasises what compares well and omits what does not, and knowing which is which makes the comparison useful.
The numbers that predict how it will feel
Storage type. Solid state or mechanical. The single most predictive item on the sheet for everyday responsiveness, and it is frequently buried.
Storage capacity, and whether it can be changed later.
Memory capacity, and — critically — whether it is soldered. Rarely stated plainly; look for "onboard" or check the manufacturer's detailed specification.
Screen resolution and panel type on a laptop. Quality varies enormously at the same price.
Battery capacity, in watt-hours. More useful than the claimed hours, which is measured under conditions that do not resemble use.
Weight, if you will carry it.
Support period, which is almost never on the sheet and matters more than most things that are.
The numbers that mislead
Processor clock speed
Comparable within a generation and family, and not across them. A newer processor at a lower clock speed frequently outperforms an older one at a higher speed.
Boost speeds are the maximum under ideal conditions, held briefly. In a thin laptop, sustained speed is far below the advertised figure because heat limits it.
Core counts matter for tasks that use them and not for tasks that do not.
Better approach: find the specific processor model in an independent benchmark comparison. The model number is what to search, not the marketing name.
"Up to" anything
Battery life "up to" a figure, measured playing a low-brightness video with everything disabled. Expect substantially less.
Speeds "up to", on connections and drives.
Treat "up to" as the ceiling under laboratory conditions, not as a prediction.
Memory speed
Capacity matters; speed rarely does for ordinary use. A sheet emphasising memory speed while offering 8 GB is directing your attention.
Contrast and brightness figures
Measured in ways that vary by manufacturer and are frequently not comparable. Dynamic contrast figures in particular mean very little.
Storage read speeds
The peak sequential figure, which describes large file transfers. Everyday responsiveness depends on small random operations, which the sheet does not state.
The mechanical-to-solid-state gap is enormous. The gap between good and excellent solid state is not felt.
Camera megapixels
A poor predictor of image quality, which depends more on sensor size, lens and processing.
What is omitted, and why it matters
Whether memory is soldered. The most consequential omission on a laptop specification.
Sustained performance under load. Two laptops with the same processor perform very differently depending on cooling, and the sheet never says.
Fan noise.
Screen panel type and quality, beyond resolution.
Build quality and repairability.
Support period.
What ports are actually present, and what they support — a USB-C port may or may not carry video or charging, and the sheet frequently says only "USB-C".
Whether the power supply in a desktop is adequate for a later graphics card.
How to compare two machines properly
1. Find both specific processor models in an independent benchmark. Not the marketing name — the exact model number.
2. Check storage type and capacity, and whether either can be changed.
3. Check whether memory is soldered.
4. Read reviews for sustained performance and noise, which the sheet cannot tell you.
5. Check the support period.
6. Look at the screen specification properly on a laptop.
7. Then compare price.
The order matters. Comparing price first anchors everything else.
Reading a desktop specification
Easier, because nearly everything is changeable.
Check the power supply rating and quality, which is where prebuilt machines economise and which limits later upgrades.
Check the motherboard model, which determines what you can upgrade to. A prebuilt with a restricted board is a machine you cannot improve.
Check the case airflow, which determines whether the components can sustain their speeds.
Check whether memory occupies all slots, because two occupied slots on a two-slot board means replacing rather than adding.
Phrases worth translating
"Business class" — usually genuinely better built.
"Gaming" — sometimes better cooling, always a price premium and lighting.
"Ultrabook" or "thin and light" — expect thermal limits and soldered memory.
"Ideal for everyday tasks" — a modest specification.
"Enhanced" or "optimised" anything — marketing.
"Refurbished" — varies enormously. Manufacturer refurbished with a warranty is frequently excellent value; unspecified refurbished is a risk.
The three questions that cut through it
Is the storage solid state, and how much?
Is the memory enough, and can it be changed?
How long will it receive updates?
Those three predict more about living with a machine than every other number on the sheet combined. See what is worth spending money on.
