When a Cheap Component Is a False Economy
Some components are safe to buy cheaply and some take other things with them when they fail. Which is which, and how to tell quality from marketing.
Buying the cheapest option is right more often than enthusiast forums suggest. It is wrong for a specific short list, and the reason is not performance — it is what happens when the cheap one fails.
The rule
Economise on things that fail harmlessly. Do not economise on things that fail destructively, or that you cannot easily replace.
A cheap keyboard that fails costs a keyboard. A cheap power supply that fails can take the motherboard, the drives and the graphics card with it.
Where not to economise
The power supply
The clearest case in computing.
A poor unit delivers unstable voltage, which causes crashes and restarts that get misdiagnosed as memory or software for months.
It frequently delivers less than its label claims. A unit labelled 600W from an unknown brand may deliver considerably less under real load.
And when it fails, it can fail destructively, damaging what it was powering.
What to look for: a recognised manufacturer, an efficiency certification, and a warranty measured in years rather than months. A long warranty is a manufacturer's own statement about expected life.
Buy more capacity than you need. Units run most efficiently and coolest below their maximum.
Storage, for anything you care about
Not because cheap drives are slow — because failure costs your data.
Unknown-brand drives have higher failure rates and shorter warranties, and the saving is small relative to what is on them.
Buy from a recognised manufacturer and check the warranty length.
And back up regardless. No drive is reliable enough to be the only copy. See cloud storage and backup.
Chargers and power adapters
Particularly for laptops and phones.
Cheap unbranded chargers are a genuine safety issue. Investigations regularly find counterfeit chargers failing basic electrical safety tests — inadequate separation between mains and low voltage, which is a fire and shock risk rather than a performance one.
They also damage batteries through poor regulation.
Buy the manufacturer's, or a recognised third-party brand with proper safety certification. The saving on the alternative is not worth what it risks.
Anything soldered or difficult to replace
Memory in a laptop, if it is soldered. A one-time decision for the machine's life. See reading a specification sheet.

Things you touch constantly
Not a safety issue — a quality-of-life one.
Keyboard, mouse, chair and monitor are used every hour and last a decade. The cost per hour of use is negligible and the difference is felt continuously. See what is worth spending money on.
Where cheap is fine
Cables, provided they meet the specification. A cable either carries the signal or does not; there is no premium version that carries it better.
The caveat: specification matters. A cable rated for an older standard silently limits a newer device. Buy the right rating, not the expensive one.
Cases, beyond adequate airflow and build.
Case fans, mostly — noise is the variable, not function.
Memory, from any established brand. It works or it does not, and the differences between brands at the same specification are small.
Storage for non-critical use — a scratch drive, a media library that exists elsewhere.
Most peripherals where you have no strong preference.
Thermal paste. The differences between reasonable products are a degree or two.
Telling quality from marketing
Warranty length is the most honest signal available. A manufacturer offering five years has made a statement about expected failure rates that costs them money if wrong.
Recognised brand, which is not a guarantee and correlates.
Independent testing, where it exists.
Weight, on power supplies. A heavier unit usually has more substantial components. Crude and surprisingly reliable.
Certifications, particularly electrical safety on anything mains-connected.
What is not a signal: aggressive branding, lighting, "gaming" labelling, or a specification number without context.
The pattern to watch for
A component priced far below everything comparable is priced that way for a reason. Sometimes it is a legitimate clearance. Frequently it is a specification that is not what it appears, a counterfeit, or a manufacturer with no warranty to honour.
Particularly with power supplies, chargers, storage and memory cards, where counterfeits are common and where the fault appears later rather than immediately.
Buy from sellers with recourse. A marketplace listing at a third of the usual price, from an unfamiliar seller, is the classic case.
